    The Essential Wellington Ride

Ride Wellington’s beautiful coastline to arrive at one of our city’s favourite cafes in an outstanding nature-surrounded location. With stunning views, landmarks, history and nature- this is our most popular half-day experience. There are lots of extras and side trips you can add to this route, or keep it easy!

    Time: 2-3 hours
What to Bring: Water bottle, sunscreen, extra layer of clothing.
    Distance: 20km return
Difficulty: Easy on/off-road riding with hills only if you want them. Wind can be strong at times.
Things to Know: The route includes shared pedestrian pathways, on-road cycleways, and quiet low speed roads.

The Wellington Bays Ride includes stunning coastline, the historic inner-city waterfront area, and the Wellington Blown Away sign – the quintessential visitor’s photo spot! With lots of potential variations for you to choose from, and some of the best cafes Wellington has to offer, this has got it all.

The perfect half-way point is Shelly Bay’s beloved Chocolate Fish Cafe. Surrounded by nature, this hidden gem is only 10km from the city center. Enjoy a huge selection of modern takes on kiwi classics done bbq style, and locally roasted Supreme coffee.

There’s a reason why it’s our most popular half-day ride. People who we send out here come back beaming!

If you’re up for more you have the option of extending your ride further around the coastline. Go as far as you like and turn around on the flat, or for some elevated views and bonus points, try the Maupuia Lookout Loop.

For these rides we provide a map and directions in store.

Image of a 5 star trip advisor review which reads: The electric bikes were a great way to see Wellington. The shop is easy to get to from the cruise ship. Eric set us up perfectly and even personalized the map he gave us to include great views and a yummy lunch spot. My husband loves bicycle riding and I’m a novice but the route worked well for both of us. I highly recommend this activity and company.

    Where to Go:

From Switched on Bikes take the waterfront around towards Te Papa Museum. This is a shared bike and pedestrian area. Soon you’ll be at the golden sand of Oriental bay, then just after rounding the point you’ll need to get on the on-road cycleway for approximately 2km. Shortly you’ll be able to get back on the shared footpath. Watch out for the brightly coloured boatsheds at Evan’s Bay! Sights to see from here include the giant Zepherometer (or wind needle), the Wellington sign which looks like a hollywood sign, and the planes coming in to land. From the Wellington Sign take Shelly Bay road along the coast – it’s quiet, and just 10 minutes ride from here to the Chocolate Fish Cafe. Too good!

Take your time at the cafe then choose between heading further around the coast, or returning from there. The Wellington Bays and Maupuia Lookout ride is accessible from here for an even bigger adventure.
