Your own contents insurance will often cover theft of the bike. Check about terms and conditions with your insurer.

Yes, it’s super easy. Just plug it in like your phone. The bikes come with a charger.

If you don’t have a powerpoint where you bike is being parked you can remove the battery and bring it inside to charge. Handy huh?

You pay the first 4 weeks straight up, then we use a direct debit method through provider GoCardless. It’s trusted, secure, safe and very easy to set up. Your lease will be deducted from your account automatically. You can choose the frequency of your payments, and there are notification emails two days prior to any payment.

Our program requires a minimum commitment of 12 weeks for the $59p/week option or 4 weeks for the $100p/week option.  If you selected the 12 week option and need to cancel you can swap to the 4 week minimum option and pay the difference.

Nope, you can always pedal it like a regular bike! Plus, the battery life is surprisingly good and there are charge level indicators. It’s unlikely to be an issue unless you are doing really big rides or several large Wellington hills in a single session. Most riders can ride at least 60km before needing to charge.

Yes.  You can put up to a maximum of 12 weeks of your bike subscription payment toward the retail price of a bike. Here are the details:
If the bike was new or ‘as new’ when you picked it up then you’ll purchase the bike that you’ve been riding. If the bike was in a used condition when you collected it, or if it was new but you choose to buy a different bike then we will provide you with a bike to purchase that has travelled less km than than you travelled during your subscription. If we don’t have a suitable bike available then we’ll place an order for a similar bike. (Please note that there is currently a worldwide shortage of eBikes so depending upon the model you’re interested in there could be a wait for the bike to arrive- reach out if you’d like specifics around wait times for particular styles). Servicing and parts is included as part of your lease, but if you choose put your lease payment toward the purchase of a bike then we will add the cost of the services and parts to your purchase price- safety checks and small adjustments aren’t charged for. This offer is only for the time that you have a subscription with us, so you need to organise it prior to you subscription ending.

Yes, it is. Each rider can swap once for free, and after that for $50 each swap. We usually need to do some preparation to swap a bike, so give us a call to arrange it beforehand. If you’ve already swapped once and would like to swap again but aren’t sure if you’ll like the new bike, you can do a free test ride before commiting.

Firstly, we make sure all our bikes have great tires for this exact reason. It makes punctures rare.

Secondly, don’t panic. Give us a call. If you’re in Wellington City or Lower Hutt- and you can’t get the bike to our workshop- we can come to do a mobile repair, usually we can be there the same day. If you’re on the road and can’t move the bike, call us then you can lock the bike up and take a taxi, then we’ll collect the bike as soon as we’re able. This isn’t a 24hr service, but please still contact us out of hours and we’ll work out a solution together.

In rare occasions, we may charge a callout fee of $50. For example, breakages that aren’t the fault of Switched on Bikes or incorrect use of the bike. Often we can work through issues on the phone, so give us a call to chat it through before requesting a call out. Sending photos or videos is also very helpful.

Yes, the bikes must stay within the Wellington region and it’s designed for Wellington commuters.  If you’d like to stick a bike on the back of a car and tour the country while on holiday see our regular bike hire options.  They’re priced to reflect the different use.

No, sorry. Unfortunately, it’s too risky for our bikes. We gave it a good go, but unfortunately our customers had bikes stolen from them while doing deliveries. It’s worth getting in touch to see if we have any ex-rental bikes you can purchase.
