It’s tough to beat a milkshake in the sun at the quirky and colorful Scorchorama café. Finish it off with a dip in the sea and a lounge in the sand and you might have the best beach day imaginable. Plus, the road there is a beautiful, winding coastal dream. On your way back, stop at Shelly Bay for a coffee from Chocolate Fish Café.
Princess Bay
A guide to a good afternoon: grab drinks in Newtown, pick up some Fish and Chips from Island Bay’s Salt and Batter, and take it all out to Princess Bay to enjoy on the beach. With awesome views of Taputeranga Island and the last sunlight of the southern coast beaches, there’s no better spot for a picnic. If you’re feeling active, pop over to Red Rocks for a post-meal walkabout. Note: if your keen to hire bikes for any evening adventure, flick us an email at info@switchedonbikes.co.nz to arrange evening/overnight hires.

Breaker Bay
This sandy gem is tucked just south of Seatoun – biking there takes you along the rugged southern coastline of the Miramar Peninsula. If you’re looking for quiet and off the beaten path vibes, this is the spot for you. Walk down the beach to Point Dorset to look across the harbour entrance (good views of Pencarrow Head), then return via the ridge-line above the cliffs. If you’ve worked up an appetite, go checkout Fransiska in Seatoun for some top-notch international dishes.
Days Bay
Did you know there is no extra charge for taking a bike on the East by West ferry? Their terminal is right next door to us, so getting yourself to Days Bay is a breeze. Once there, lounge on the beach and snag a real fruit ice cream from The Boatshed. When you’re ready to ride, cruise down the coast to check out Pencarrow Lighthouse and say hi to the seals! Return to the ferry to cruise back across the harbour and you’ll have yourself one awesome day. Pro tip: give us a ring to book your bike in advance so that we can have it ready to go when you arrive… nothing worse than rushing to catch the ferry!

Headed to the beach? There’s no better way to travel than by bike. Hire an eBike and the ride there and back might just be the highlight!
Lyall Bay
No beach list is complete without it! A cruisy ride out to Wellington’s most beloved beach is rewarded with excellent people/plane/pooch watching, heaps of delish food and drink options, and the perfect spot for a swim. If the surf’s up, grab a board from Real Surf and make it a two sport day!
